A group of Chinese Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have urged multinationals to stop buying from polluting suppliers
The report released on Monday by five NGOs including Friends of Nature and the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs (IPEA) pointed the finger at Zara, Adidas, Nike, Calvin Klein, Armani, Walmart and Carrefour as well as major Chinese firms including 361 Degrees and Youngor Group.
A report in the US edition of China Daily stated that the group of NGOs found 46 out of 48 businesses surveyed had brought products from textiles producers that had numerous violations of environmental laws including secret discharge channels and discharging untreated sewerage amongst other things.
Letters have been sent to these companies urging them to begin investigations and also to ensure they make greener purchases in the future, which so far 16 have responded to.
Director of the IPEA, Ma Jun, has encouraged those that haven’t responded to also take action, while the report also wants these companies to use open data in order to check suppliers in an effort to reduce pollution.
