In its 2011 sustainability report mobile phone giant Nokia has said that it will be placing an increasing focus on supplier performance to add to the improvements it saw over the last year.
Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said "We entered 2012 in the heart of our transition, showing clear progress versus our strategy but operating in a fiercely competitive industry that is in constant flux.
"On the sustainability front, challenges also remain. We are focused on honing the direction we give our suppliers and measuring their performance, ensuring that they closely follow our comprehensive set of Nokia Supplier Requirements for environmental and social performance."
Nokia has in place a comprehensive set of Nokia Supplier Requirements which provide guidance to suppliers on their environmental and social performance. In 2011 it introduced measure to improve this performance in the areas of the environment, labour conditions, occupational health and safety and ethics.
To ensure that these are being met Nokia trained more social compliance assessors to monitor this performance as well as risk assessing key tier one suppliers.
Reduction targets are also in place on greenhouse gas emissions, water and waste for those suppliers that have the largest environmental impact.
