Responsible procurement principles and guidelines

Montréal, June 2, 2014 – Today, the Espace québécois de concertation sur les pratiques d’approvisionnement responsable (ECPAR) released responsible purchasing principles and guidelines, the Principes et lignes directrices d’approvisionnement responsable. The initiative is the first of its kind in Canada, and the ECPAR invites all the organizations across Québec seeking to invest in a responsible purchasing approach to adhere to these common principles.
By adopting these core values, organizations recognize the relevance of the principles and guidelines and should work to apply them in whole or in part according to the realities of their business environments with a view to continuous improvement.
The ECPAR invites organizations in Québec and abroad to follow the principles. However, doing so in no way implies that the ECPAR supports or approves of the organizations’ activities.
The principles are as follows.

LEADERSHIP BY EXAMPLE

Lead by example in terms of corporate responsibility through the implementation of responsible practices within the organization.

GOVERNANCE
Commit to responsible procurement and motivate employees and suppliers to do the same

ÉQUITY AND EFFICIENCY

Use responsible purchasing to create and equitably distribute value across the supply chains

ENVIRONMENTAL INTEGRITY

Implement procurement practices that reduce environmental impacts

SOCIOECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Implement practices that ensure that the goods and services that are acquired are produced with due respect to human and labour rights and maximize the benefits for workers and communities

Each principle includes an inventory of actions that organizations may implement in order to provide an added value to their business practices.
