Perhaps the biggest myth in the world of sustainable procurement is that "green" or sustainable procurement costs more. Well our advice is if it does, you're doing it wrong. The simple logic is that if you are being resource efficient in the way you are buying, you should be buying less and, guess what, that costs less.
Well the world might not be that simple, but as professional procurement managers our role is to ensure that we ensure suppliers are not charging a premium for green alternatives.
Help is at hand as Graham Randles, Principal Consultant at the Mayor of London's Green Procurement Code explains; "Green procurement is increasingly being recognised as good procurement and more and more organisations are placing a high importance on being able to demonstrate responsibility in their processes and practices. The Code provides an easy way to access information, tools and events whether you're just getting started with green procurement or you've been driving policies and innovations within your organisation for some time. Our certification programme is also very valuable to the members, especially those who are looking to secure public sector contracts as it provides evidence that green procurement is being taken seriously within an organisation."
After ten years the Mayor of London's Green Procurement Code continues to go from strength to strength, members of the Code include the BBC, Barts and the London NHS Trust, the Greater London Authority Group and Ofgem.
A guide of "how to implement green procurement" is available along with a Green Products Directory and Procurement toolkit. For more information on the Code and how to join visit: Green Procurement Code
