The European Union (EU) is ramping up pressure on Bangladeshi authorities to improve factory conditions by threatening trade restrictions. Bangladesh currently enjoys duty and quota-free access to EU markets and means that its garment export industry is worth some $19bn a year with 60% of the clothes made in Bangladeshi factories making their way to Europe
