China Mobile’s vice president and executive director in charge of procurement has resigned following an ongoing bribery investigation.
Lu Xiangdong, a senior executive at the world’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, stepped down because of his inability to perform his duties “under his current personal circumstances”, according to the Financial Times.
Mr Lu’s resignation follows allegations aimed at least 11 senior managers of China Mobile, who stepped down because of corruption charges following the 2009 arrest of Zhang Chunjiang, deputy chairman of the group. Mr Zhang was charged with accepting more than Rmb7.46m ($1.2m) in bribes and was given a suspended death sentence in July last year.
Wang Jianzhou, chairman of China Mobile, admitted to the press that there had been numerous cases of senior officials violating law and regulations.
“The company has paid a lot of attention to internal management and on improving procedures,” he said. He added that the company had tightened the management of its procurement processes.
